A famous play and poetry workshop Dorothy Wordsworth
A play celebrating Dorothy Wordsworth will be staged in two venues in West Cumbria this weekend.
‘The Lament of Dorothy Wordsworth’ will open at 2pm Saturday at the Kirkgate Center and 2pm Sunday at The Settlement, Maryport.
It will be followed by a poetry workshop from the play’s creators, PenPal Productions.
PenPal Productions is a women-led theater company based in Edinburgh, promoting women’s voices, positive ageing, neurodiversity and friendship.
A spokesperson said: “Jane Sunderland wrote this piece for a woman knowing both that female artists are often underestimated and that the support they provide to their husbands and male relationships is rarely fully appreciated.
“In this case, Dorothy did an enormous amount of domestic and literary work for her famous brother William. She also cultivated the garden of Dove Cottage with him, walked the hills with him, and diligently wrote her diary, observations from which William often drew in his poetry.
“In the play, Jane imagines the discussions, and perhaps the arguments, that Dorothy and William might have had over different wordings.”
The play is set in 1801 when Dorothy and William have recently moved into Dove Cottage in Grasmere.
