Colombian mother-daughter duo take home the world’s best cookbook award
A Colombian mother-daughter duo received the prize for the best cookbook in the world at the Gourmand Awards in Paris, The Guardian reported.
Mother Zoraida “Chori” Agamez and her daughter Heidy Pinto, both of whom have been cooking since their childhood, won the prize for their book. Envueltos, which is a celebration of traditional dishes wrapped in leaves from their country.
” Colombia envueltos are part of a culinary heritage that spans much of Latin America, from tamales in Mexico and Guatemala to humitas in Chile, ”the report says.
According to the report, the envueltos involve “a kind of dough, or masa, made with starches that could be corn, yucca, bananas or rice, sprinkled with tasty toppings.” These can be pork, chicken and other meats, or beans and vegetables. The dish is then wrapped in a corn husk or other foil for cooking, usually steamed.
After their victory, the duo said: “Our hearts burst with emotion with this precious award.”
“In tough times, in sad times, in the midst of a pandemic, cooking will always be part of the solution,” they said. “Long live the tradition, envueltos and Colombian cuisine.
Four years ago, women traveled the country to pick up traditional dishes. “We had conducted workshops on manufacturing techniques envueltos. We focused on the masa, but people wanted to know more about the packaging. So we started to travel all over Colombia in search of envueltos, to find out where they are popular, what they are called locally and how they are made. We have collected over 300 recipes, ”said Pinto The Guardian.
Agamez and Pinto, from the town of Barrancabermeja in northern Colombia, first started sharing these recipes on their blog, El Toque Colombian (The Colombian touch). Publisher Daniel Guerrero stumbled upon their website and offered to publish their recipes in a book.
After being published by the Guerrero Publishing House, Culture Chamber (Culture Hunger), the cookbook rose to fame during the lockdown as nostalgic Colombians living across the world fervently ordered it.
It was shortlisted in May 2021 for the Gourmand Awards, which is a first gastronomic and cultural prize.
