Jessica Harrington will be hoping to crush the Palace Pier and Poetic Flare night when she takes on the best of men’s milers with Alpine Star in a generational heavyweight clash in Sunday’s Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois in Deauville.

The four-year-old filly had a superb campaign last year, winning the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot for the first time before finishing second in three subsequent Group 1s in France, including Jacques le Marois when she lost to Palace Pier by less than one length.

After an absence of 292 days, Alpine Star returned for 2021 with a surprise loss in the odds for the Listed Lyric Fillies’ Stakes in York three weeks ago.

Harrington is happy to make this run into the history books and is confident the one mile return will suit the Niarchos family filly, Ladbrokes shooting her 10-1 to upset the lead duo.

The coach, who also won Alpha Centauri’s victory in this race three years ago for the same connections, said: “It looks like a very competitive race. I know it was beaten in York, but she was very cool that day and when they ‘it’s like that then it can happen. We’re going back a mile here and she should settle in a lot better this time. “

Alpine Star career details

Star milers Palace Pier and Poetic Flare lead the remaining entries with a field of 12 in contention as the pair held on after the forfeit stage on Wednesday morning.

The two were to meet in the Sussex Stakes at Glorious Goodwood until a blood disorder ruled out Palace Pier the week before the race in which Alcohol Free defeated Poetic Flare.

Jim Bolger shows no signs of slowing down, however, with his 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace Stakes winner, and Sunday could mark his sixth consecutive Group 1 appearance in just over three months.

The dominant Palace Pier figure stands on his way to securing a fourth win of the season, which is aiming for back-to-back wins in this race and has won all but one of its nine starts.

Sunday’s victory would mark a fifth at the highest level for Palace Pier and a third Marois in the past eight years for co-coach John Gosden, who also succeeded with Kingman in 2014.

The four-year-old is fully recovered from his pre-Goodwood setback and has been logged on, although Ladbrokes made it slightly easier to become a game favorite (5-6) with Poetic Flare second seed at 7-2.

Ladbrokes spokesperson Nicola McGeady said: “Palace Pier is the one punters want to be with this weekend, but we think there’s a reason to face it. missed the Sussex Stakes due to a setback, this is the first time he’s come against that three-year crop of the season, and Poetic Flare will be stiff opposition. “

Seven horses were withdrawn at the forfeit stage. Maurice de Gheest Prize winner Marianafoot will not attempt for an eighth consecutive victory, while Shadwell star Baaeed was also knocked out with the Prix du Moulin at Longchamp or Celebration Mile at Goodwood options for the unbeaten de three years.

However, the 1,000 Guineas winner Mother Earth could try for a quick brace at Deauville after winning the Rothschild Prize last week, with Ballydoyle also confirming Order Of Australia among the 12.

Poetic Flare’s stable mate Mac Swiney was also left out, while Chindit, coached by Richard Hannon, rounds out any possible British and Irish challengers.

Legendary French coach Andre Fabre is aiming for a record-breaking eighth victory in Le Marois, and he is set to field Chantilly Group 3 winner Victor Ludorum and the slightly raced Midtown, both for Godolphin.
