How Children Learn Poetry While Playing Basketball in County Guilford

GUILFORD COUNTY, NC (WGHP) — Children ages 4 to 13 learn the building blocks of language through movement.

Kids Poetry Basketball teaches literacy through 26 different games. Activities are offered at recreation centers, after-school programs and summer camps in Guilford County. Founder and Executive Director Clement Mallory got the idea for the nonprofit while watching an NBA game over a decade ago.

“I thought, ‘What if instead of displaying a number, a letter was displayed, and the first team to spell their poetic word won the game?'” Mallory said.

Mallory recognizes that learning words and vocabulary through practice is a new way of teaching. He says it’s another way for students to gain confidence.

“By developing critical thinking skills, we build their self-esteem, we build their self-awareness,” he said.

Participants prepare to show off their skills at the 10th annual Kids Poetry Basketball Community Party event. Everyone is invited to attend free activities on December 10 at the Windsor Recreation Center in Greensboro from 2-5 p.m.

Support from the Community Foundation of Greater Greensboro keeps the program free for young learners. You can support the association with online donations.
