PITTSBURGH, October 26, 2021 / PRNewswire / – A peer-reviewed article written by clinicians and data scientists at Net health highlights the value of machine learning and artificial intelligence (AI) in predicting wound healing times and risks. The article, “Predict the healing time of chronic wounds using machine learning to support real-time clinical decisions” was published in the September issue of Advances in Wound Care.

For the study, clinicians and data scientists used information from Net Health’s Wound Care EHR to predict the likelihood of a patient’s wounds healing within 4, 8, and 12 weeks of starting treatment. The models were trained on three datasets of more than 1.2M wounds, including 187 covariates describing patient demographics, co-morbidities such as weight, smoking and other conditions, wound characteristics, and time between treatments.

“Wound care costs the nation tens of billions of dollars every year,” said lead author Matt Berezo, a Data Scientist at Net Health. “The impact of wounds that do not heal adds unnecessary costs and negatively impacts the quality of life of patients. We wanted to know what factors were inhibiting wound healing so that we could help providers make faster and better decisions about how to treat patients, thereby improving outcomes and lowering the cost of care. ”

The Journal article is one of the first to prove the value of machine learning and AI in predicting chronic wound healing and illustrating how these predictions can be used to support real-time clinical decisions. Additionally, while there have been previous studies of AI applied to wound healing, none have included such a comprehensive data set, or assessed such a broad prediction horizon – from every visit through. at the conclusion of the case.

“We wanted to develop models that could accurately predict wound healing time at each visit throughout treatment, and also find which factors uniquely affect a patient’s likelihood of recovery,” Berezo explained. “With this information, clinicians can make more timely decisions that can help improve treatment and lower costs of care.”

The algorithm developed by the company’s data scientists significantly outperforms other published models, providing a high level of confidence in the predictions provided to clinicians using the software. The algorithm used to analyze the data is also able to highlight comorbidities that contribute to the predicted healing trajectory of each patient’s wounds. For example, predictors such as weight and conditions such as diabetes and hypertension, especially when more than one of these co-morbidities are present, tend to negatively impact the likelihood of a wound healing. This general approach aligns with precision medicine methodologies pursued in the healthcare industry today.
