Nine-year-old Gabrielle wins Shakespeare-inspired poetry competition

A NINE-year-old girl has won a poetry contest and her work is on display in a show home celebrating Prescot’s connection to Shakespeare.

Miller Homes launched the competition with pupils from St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s CE Primary School in Prescot to celebrate its latest Sonnet Gate development, inspired by the town’s Shakespeare connection and the new Shakespeare North Playhouse.

1st, 2nd and 3rd places

The competition was launched to encourage children to write a poem about their own home and what they love about it.

The winner of the competition was nine-year-old Gabrielle Inwood from Prescot.

Her poem “Home” is now featured in the Sonnet Gate show home as part of the interior design.

Honorable mentions in the home builder competition included nine-year-old Halle Haruna, who came second with her poem “My Home, My Home” and 10-year-old Ben Dickson-Moore, whose poem titled “My Sweet Home”. Rachel Ball, a teacher at St. Mary’s and St. Paul’s, said: ‘The children had a lot of fun writing and illustrating their poems, and it was very difficult to choose the top three.’

Clare Noakes, Sales Manager of Miller Homes North West, added: “Looking at the local links to Shakespeare, we thought it would be a great opportunity for the winner to see their lovely poem displayed in a show home, where many visitors will read while looking around.

“We would like to thank St. Mary’s School and St. Paul’s for working with us on this exciting project. We hope that those who come to visit our Sonnet Gate show home will enjoy reading Gabrielle’s beautiful words.

Gabrielle’s winning poem reads:

Home is where I lay

Home is where two dogs play,

This is where I start my day,

This is my favorite place to stay.

Home is where I always have a big smile,

Home is where me and my friends play for a while.

Home is where I like to eat,

Home is where we will all meet.

This is where I invite my eccentric friends,

It’s a time we don’t want to end.

We have a family pizza night,

This is a time when we never fight.

My family cheers me up and makes me laugh out loud.

I know I make them proud.
