Virginia War Memorial Hosts Essay Contest for Veterans Day
RICHMOND, Virginia (WFXR) – Attention all college and high school students!
The Virginia War Memorial in Richmond is seeking entries for the Virginia War Memorial 2021 Veterans Day Student Essay Competition – an annual competition open to all public, private, and home-schooled middle and high school students in Virginia.

There will be two divisions, one for middle school students (grades six to eight) and one for high school students (grades nine to 12).
This year’s topic is “An American who served in the military following the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 inspires me.”
Students can focus on a member of their family, their community, or a famous man or woman who has served in any branch of the US military as a subject.
Essays should be between 500 and 750 words long and use interviews and primary sources where possible.
The two students chosen as winners in their division will each receive a $ 250 gift card. Their teacher will receive a $ 100 gift card to purchase school supplies.
Winning students will also be invited to visit Richmond and write their essays aloud and participate in the Commonwealth Veterans Day Ceremony at the Virginia War Memorial on Thursday, November 11, 2021.
The registration deadline is Sunday, October 17, 2021 and must be submitted online at the Virginia War Memorial website.
