Willits Community Theater presents Starlight Lounge Poetry – The Ukiah Daily Journal

Mendocino County poets Daniel Essman and Theresa Whitehill are star readers of Starlight Lounge, a bimonthly poetry series at the Willits Community Theater. The reading is scheduled for 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 12.

An open reading will take place after featured readers have read. Entrance to the reading is by donation and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. Members of the public must present proof of vaccination upon entry and the wearing of face coverings by the public is recommended.

Poet and typographic artist Theresa Whitehill was the City of Ukiah Poet Laureate from 2009-2011 and has been involved throughout her career in producing poetry readings and literary events. Her interrelated interest in the literary and book arts grew out of her studies at Mills College in the early 1980s. Since 1984 she has lived in Mendocino County, where she is well known to local poetic audiences. Her poetry collections include ‘A Natural History of Mill Towns’ (1993) and ‘A Grammar of Longing’ (2009), both published by Pygmy Forest Press.

Daniel Essman is a Willits poet who for several decades co-hosted the Car Lords poetry series in Willits with his wife, Robin Rule. He also earned a following as a film critic for the Noyo Theater and is known for his signature statement, “He likes his reality tempered by the wisdom of the imagination.”

The Willits Community Theater is located at 37 West Van Lane in downtown Willits. That is, one block west of Mazahar Boutique on the north end of Main Street and one block south of Pizza To Go on the first block of West Commercial Street.
